Ever since their birth, the interface approaches of narratology and stylistics have focused on the plot development and/or its verbal or discoursal presentation in literary narratives. But in many fictional narratives, behind the plot development, there exists a covert progression, forming an implicit dynamic behind the explicit. In those narratives marked by dual narrative dynamics, no matter how detailed the stylistic analysis is and no matter how comprehensive the narratological analysis is, so long as attention centers on the plot development, the analysis cannot offer an adequate account of the rhetorical design, thematic significance, and aesthetic value of the narrative.
