Defoe's novel Roxana is a story about the tragedy of the body transgression of an eighteenth-century British woman to experience modernity. The title heroine in Roxana, forced by life, changes from a woman of morals with a disciplined body to a "she-merchant" with her body capital by abdicating the duty of a mother and wife. Though her transgressed body bears the characteristic of modernity, Roxana' s pursuit of individuality and happiness by catering to the patriarchy will definitely in turn be punished and her body experience of modern life is doomed to be a tragedy.
