Unquestionably, Ezra Pound is the leading figure of the Anglo-American modernist poetry. His early poems , for their innovative techniques and strong criticism of historical modernity, set a good model for other young modernistic poets. Hugh Selwyn Mauberley, which is always regarded as Pound＇ s first success of creative writing, launches a strong attack at modernity through detailed analysis of different aspects of the western civilization such as the contradiction of modern society and aesthetics, the hypocrisy of democracy, modern civilization and the 1 st world war, commercial society and the degeneration of man, etc. This paper argues that this poem demonstrates Pound＇ s critical thought of historical modernity and hence deserves more research.
