On Methodist Church's Preaching in the Early 1900's in Shi Mengkan

1904年柏格理开始在贵州省威宁县石门坎建立传教基地,传教的同时柏格理等传教士把西方社会具有近代意义的科学知识、价值观念和风俗习惯等也一同引入,普遍提高了当地苗族群众的文化知识水平。他们放弃优越的生活,远离家乡,来到穷乡僻壤的山区,以无私奉献的精神来爱这片土地,爱这片土地上的人们,他们应该得到我们的尊敬与敬佩。

In the early 1900’s ,missionaries with Methodist Church like Pollard brought Christianity into Shi Mengkan through such ways as scientific and cultural preaching .This helped those living in Miao people’ areas shrug off the spirit-ual and material poverty and subsequently its gospel got widely spread .In the clash between two completely different Cul-tures ,the inferior or weaker side would inevitably die out ,as a result ,Miao people’s excellent history ,culture and tradi-tions have got partly lost .In terms of culture ,the preaching has exerted some negative impacts on Miao people’s society . However ,today we should reconsider this important event in the history of Miao people’s development in a more dialecti-cal and objective way .
