The Appropriate Role of Dictionaries in Word Translation——A Perspective from Translation as Adaptation and Selection

词典是翻译工作的必备工具,在词语理解与翻译中发挥着重要作用,但翻译实践者对于词典的使用,仍然存在着很大的误区。翻译适应选择论指出,翻译即"适应"与"选择",最佳翻译即"整合适应选择度"最高的翻译。从生态翻译学观点看,"hereditary stupidity"的汉译,需要译者在词语翻译过程中遵循"适应/选择"原则,合理、有效地发挥词典作用,达到最高的"整合适应选择度",才能得到准确真实的译文。

As a key tool in English learning and translating, dictionaries play an indispensable role in the translation of words and phrases. However, the optimum use of dictionaries and other references still remains a problem to many English learners and translators. According to Professor Hu Geng-shen’s approach to translation as adaptation and selection, this thesis, with an analysis of the disputes over the translation of “hereditary stupidity”, an expression from Karl Marx’s article on the revolution in China, concludes that dictionar-ies should be used with a full awareness of multi-dimensional adaptation and selection by a translator so as to achieve the highest degree of holistic adaptation and selection.
