公主作为两汉皇室成员的重要组成部分,其婚姻颇受统治阶级重视。一般而言,汉代公主的初婚年龄大致在十三四岁至十六七岁之间,其择婚对象多为列侯和世家豪族子弟。由于汉代公主的婚姻常被作为皇帝联结主要社会势力的手段,故而大多带有浓重的政治意味和悲剧色彩。

Princesses were an important component of the royal families of the Han dynasties. Their marriages were taken seriously by the ruling class. In general, the initial marriages for the prin- cesses in the Han dynasties were at thirteen-fourteen to sixteen-seventeen years of age. Their chosen spouses were mostly descendants of the vassals and the aristocracy. Owing to the fact that the marriages of the princesses were means of linking social influential forces for the emperor, they mostly took on a sense of profound politics and tragic color.
