Objective: To investigate the expression patterns of monocarboxylate transporter MCT1 and MCT2 in human astrocytoma with different pathologic grades, and to explore the molecular mechanism underlying the growth and proliferation of astrocytoma. Methods: Fifty-one astrocytoma samples of different pathological grades were obtained, the relative normal brain tissues around the tumor served as controls. The expression variations of MCT1 and MCT2 at protein levels in human astroeytoma tissues were observed by the techniques of HE staining, immunohistochemisty and Western biotting. Results: Compared with the normal brain tissues, both MCT1 and MCT2 had a strong expression in human astrocytoma, and were enhanced with the increasing of pathologic grades. The expression of MCT1 and MCT2 in high grade astrocytoma was much higher than that in low grade astrocytoma. Conclusion: Protein expressions of MCT1 and MCT2 are increased in human astrocytoma compared to normal controls, and have a positive correlation with pathologic grades.
