The presence of Chinese people in African countries has been increasing in the 21st century. Its politi- cal and economic ramifications have been the focus of new research that seeks to account for this phenomenon. This article details the growing body of literature. It further emphasizes the relevance of a politics of culture, as the Chi- nese government aims to cultivate more people-to-people exchanges and interactions between Chinese and Africans through state-initiated activities. As their numbers increase in Africa, Chinese migrants should be concerned with both who is represented and who gets to represent "Chineseness" to Africans who know little about China and Chi- nese people. This paper aims to provide the context for reflection.
