The Writing of Ma's Grammar: Continuation of Ma Jianzhong's Undertaking of Patriotic Actions

马建忠被语言学界称为语法学家,然而其生平志愿却并不仅在语法,他更看重自己的事功。他一生都在办理洋务,主张富民强国,可是,马建忠并没有得到时人的太多理解,在近代史上他是一个备受争议的人物。他是在兴办洋务受挫,遭到李鸿章的摈斥之后,才退居家中从事《马氏文通》的写作。他认为富民强国必须熟悉洋务,而熟悉洋务必须从学习西洋语言开始,学习语言又必须以语法为基础。这就促成了《马氏文通》的诞生。《马氏文通》的写作是马建忠办理洋务、富民强国行动的继续。

Ma Jianzhong,with his masterw ork of M a's Grammar( Mashi Wentong),is taken as a grammarian in the circle of linguistics. How ever,Ma Jianzhong's ambition is not to be alittle grammarian,but to be a major contributor to his country and the people. He was engaged in foreign affairs and enterprises all his life,with a noble ambition to make the people rich and to build his country strong. But Ma Jianzhong was not well understood at his time,and was usually criticized by others. When he was scolded by Li Hongzhang,the Prime Minister,he realized his frustration,and he had no choice but retired to work on M a's Grammar. If one wants to make the country strong,he has to know the world,especially Europe; if he wants to know Europe,he has to know the European languages; and if he wants to know the European languages,he has to know grammar. This is the logic of Ma Jianzhong in writing his grammar. The writing of M a's Grammar is the continuation of Ma Jianzhong's undertaking of making the people rich and building the country strong.
