In the Qing Dynasty novel Jing Hua Yuan (Flowers in the Mirror), the Empress Wu Zetian is described as the incarnation of a star called "Heart - moon - fox", and her destiny is closely related to the star. Three factors, i. e. , "heart"," month" and "Fox", jointly build the cultural image of Wu Zetian. "Heart" refers to the Antares, representing the center position of Wu Zetian as the Empress. The novelist uses it to show her "divine right of sovereign", confirming the human business on earth with heavenly mandate. The "Moon" represents Yin and female, suggesting the gender identity of Wu Zetian, with the implication of her disordering Yin and Yang and usurping the throne. "Fox" reflects the changing of people' s aesthetic atti- tude to Wu Zetian, from positive to negative, from masculine to feminine, from a lofty ruler decline to an alien species. From "heart Fox" , moon to , the process of Wu Zetian' s transformation from " Goddess", "people" to "demon" is displayed.
