During his visits to Kazakhstan and Indonesia in September and October 2013 respectively, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for the joint development of an economic belt along the Silk Road and a mari- time Silk Road for the 21st centupJ. These are two major initiatives that China has put forward to deepen the reform and opening up and ad- vance diplomacy with its close neighbors.
