Said's Views on Intellectuals

在一系列演讲中,萨义德对知识分子提出许多富有启示的见解。他认为,知识分子不仅直接对公众说话,还为公众提供观点、态度和意见。在他看来,边缘人的社会角色,更能发挥知识分子的作用;业余者的职业特征,既保持了知识分子的独立性,又可对社会现象进行道德评判;而敢于对权势说真话,则是知识分子的比较基本的辨识标志。虽然萨氏之论没有启人心智的体系建构,某些观点缺乏必要的论证,但我们应该珍视他的这份信念。

In a series of lecture, Said proposed a number of enlightening insights on intellectual. He argues that intellectuals not only talk directly to public, but offer them ideas, attitudes and opinions. In his opinion, in- tellectual as the marginal may better play their roles, as amateur career can maintain their independence and judged morally on the social phenomenon. It is their basic identification marks who dare to speak the truth to au- thority. Said＇s theory didn＇t have systematic reconstruction inspiring people＇s intelligence, and a few of points lack the necessary proof, but we should cherish his belief.
