On Composition of Epistolary Prose in Southern Dynasties

南朝书体文数量颇多,题材内容多样。从内容上来看,诸作或畅谈佛学理趣,或阐发文学观念,或讨论书法艺术等。从形式上来看,诸文或散或骈,散体书信句式灵活多样,言志抒情明确深刻;骈体书信讲究藻采、用典、声律、对偶,具有较高的审美价值。

There are a remarkable number of epistolary proses which are of varied themes and contents in Southern Dynasties. By content, the prose either talks about the Li philosophy and Buddhism, or expresses literary viewpoints, or discusses art of calligraphy. By form, the prose is composed either in odd style or parallel style. While the odd style is featured by flexible sentence patterns, expressing ambition and emotion clearly and deeply, the parallel style underlines luxuriant diction, numerous allusions, harmonious syllables and delicate antithesis, manifesting the high aesthetic value.
