Traditional agriculture systems could adapt to the disaster risks in order to maintain their development based on their relatively unique traditional practices or techniques. In this study, taking the traditional household vineyard(THV) in Xuanhuan County,Hebei province,we analyzed the adaptation characteristics of the THV.An indicator system and assessment model of adaptation potential to droughts was established based on the physical environment. The spatial pattern of adaptation potential of household agriculture to droughts in semi-arid regions of China was explored and discussed. The results showed that.(1) A " Northeast-Southwest" spatial pattern of THV with high level of adaptation potential to droughts was delineated;the central and southern part of Inner Mongolia, northwestern Hubei, northern Shanxi and Shaanxi were the priority areas to develop the THV.(2) In a long term, the areas with high level of adaptation potential show an obvious spatial expansion to the outside of the high density areas. The areas with high level of adaptation potential aggregated together.(3) The " adaptation potential" is a new concept in the field of disaster adaptation research, which could be a forcing factor to deepen and widen the disaster adaptation research scope. The study could provide a scientific basis on the research of disaster adaptation, and also provide a support reference to adjustment of industrial structure and income increase at the household scale in the semi-arid regions of China.
