As a big coastal province, Canton has blooming port trade and advanced shipbuilding. It had frequent port commercial and trade activities with Japan in the Qing Dynasty, which improved Chinese book exchange. After Meiji Reformation, although Chinese learning was declining due to the increasing popularity of western leaming, and Chinese books were unprecedentedly left out in the cold, still a lot of Chinese books were exchanged in the port trade. For example, as many as twelve Canton topographies entered Japan in one single year. These port trade activities made Canton's economy, life and education etc. recorded in Japanese businessmen's travel notes, which make up important historical materials today. In addition, Chinese poets in Japan took poetry of the Qing Dynasty as their learning and appreciating target in Meiji Period, which also influenced Chinese book exhange.
