Beckett is both a writer and an intellectual who has read a variety of philosophical works. This paper is an attempt to sort out the relationship between Beckett and the French writer-philosopher Blanchot, through their association in real and literary life,in the context of the former's acceptance of the latter's understanding of language.Specifically, the treatment of language in Beckett's novel The Unnamable, together with his elaboration on the idea of nothingness and the paradox of narrative and death,is investigated.Generally speaking, there are two stages in the understanding of language both for Blanchot and Beckett, that is,nothingness and death. The'I'in narration and the'I'who narrates both disappear in the narrative after these two stages.
