"青年亚文化"是20世纪60年代西方大众文化发展中的一种新的文化形式,体现的是处于社会主流文化之外的青少年群体的生活方式、生存立场、道德准则、价值观念与人生信仰,它往往与嬉皮士青年、光头党、飞车党、朋克一族等青少年群体边缘性、颠覆性与对抗性的社会行为联系起来,展现了西方大众传媒与商业文化崛起过程中青少年群体对社会主流文化既剥离抗争同时又适应调和的文化体验过程。"青年亚文化"研究是"伯明翰学派"早期文化研究最有影响力的成果之一,它不但奠定了"伯明翰学派"在西方文化研究领域中的领军地位,而且充分体现了20世纪英国文化研究的理论特色。

Youth subculture was a new form of western mass culture in the 1960s,which embodied the adolescent way of life,survival stance,ethics,values and beliefs outside the mainstream culture.It was often linked with the marginal,subversive and confrontational social behaviors of the adolescent groups,such as the hippes,the skinhead,the street racers,and the punk,and demontrated the process of cultural experience in the development of the western mass media and commercial culture: on one hand the adolescent groups would like to escape and resist the mainstream culture, on the other hand they also wanted to accommodate with it. As one of the most influential achievements of Bermingham school's early research,youth subculture studies not only established the leading position of Bermingham school in western studies,but also fully embodied the theoretical characteristics of the 20th century British cultural studies.
