Objective:To investigate the characteristics of involuntary attention in patients with hy- pertension. Methods: P3a component of the event related potentials(ERP)was used to value visual invol- untary attention of 12 patients with essential hypertension and 12 norrmal controls. All the subjects were submitted to cognitive assessment by Mini-Mental-State-Examination(MMSE). Results: Compared with control group, the MMSE score of patients with hypertension was decreased(P〈0.05). The mean ampli- tude of N2 in hypertensive patients decreased more obviously than normal controls(P〈0.05), particularly at forehead central sites(P〈0. 05) , whereas the N2 component was larger at forehead-central region in controls(P〈0.05). But for the latency of N2,there was no significant effect of both groups. In addition, the latency of P3a of hypertensive patients was different from normal controls, but there was no statistical significance(P〈0.05). The latency of visual P3a was significantly longer in patients with hypertension than in controls(P〈0.05). Conclusion:The problem in the processing of visual involuntary attention oc- curs in hypertensive patients, and the study of it provides new objective evidence for the mechanism and assessment of visual involuntary attention in patients with hypertension.
