The Perception of China and Sino-Japan Relations by Japanese Liberal Intellectuals in the Mid Showa Era: A Case Study of Hotta Yoshiei

由于思想背景和专业领域的原因,战败之前,日本自由派知识人对中国并无太多关注,对日本侵华战争也未表现出认真的思考。但战败形成了一个巨大契机,促使这部分知识人去深刻反省日本的近代史,而中日关系是日本在近代历程中极为重要、也是最为沉重的部分。一旦他们有机缘与中国发生关系,出于自由主义的价值观和独立理性的知识人的立场,他们对中国以及近代以来的中日关系,往往会有突破狭隘民族主义视野的深刻思考和评判,并因出色的专业成就和社会地位,他们的意见和观点还具有一定的舆论领袖的影响力。战后派代表作家堀田善卫是其中较有代表性的例子。

Due to their ideological backgrounds and areas of expertise, Japanese liberal intellectuals did not put much attention to China before the defeat of Japanese war of aggression against China; neither did they think seriously about the war. Japan＇s defeat, however, gave a great opportunity for these intellectuals to make deep retrospection of Japan＇s modern history and in particular the Sino-Japan relations, an extremely important and most bitter part of this history. Once they were connected to China, on the basis of their liberal values and independent intellectual positions they tended to have profound thoughts and judgment on China and modern Sino-Japan relations beyond narrow nationalism. And by virtue of their outstanding professional achievements and social status, their views and perspectives also had some opinion-leading influence. Hotta Yoshiei represented one of these post-war writers.
