Research on the Biography of Yu

《禹本纪》是中国古代地理名篇,太史公将其与《山海经》并举,故为世人所知。但由于其书早佚,其内容与性质究竟如何,长期以来未为学界所知,前人所论也多有不明之处。从传世典籍的零星记载与前人的论述中,勾稽出其基本轮廓,并对其地理价值与《山海经》做了对比判定。郦道元作《水经注》时尚能亲见其书,唐以后逐渐亡佚。

The Biography of Yu （Yu Ben Ji） was a famous geographic work in ancient China, Taishi Sima Qian had ever equated it with the Classic of Mountains and Rivers （Shan Hal Jing）, as it is well known. However, what was the work about？ The predecessors hadn＇t made it clearly. By concluded from the Chinese ancient books and the previous discussions, it shows the text of the Biography of Yu is short, and the value in Geography is far less than the Classic of Mountains and Rivers. Li Dao-yuan in the Northern Wei Dynasty who wrote the Commentary on the Waterways Classic （Shui Jing Zhu） had ever seen it, but it gradually lost since the Tang Dynasty.
