The Role of Translator: QIAN Gechun's Version of“The Masque of the Red Death”

译者作为联系原文与译文的中介,在整个翻译实践中扮演着多重角色。文章通过分析钱歌川译作《红死之假面》,揭示其在整个翻译过程中所扮演的四重角色:国学研究者角色、西方文化研究者角色、西方文化影响者角色和日本文化影响的角色。文章认为,一个好的译者,应扮好自身积极的角色,尽量克服消极角色,从而使译文质量趋于完善。

As a medium of source text and target text, a translator plays various roles in the whole process of translation. This paper aims to discover four kinds of roles played by Qian Gechuan, the translator of ＂The Masque of the Red Death＂ ：a scholar of Chinese culture, researcher of Western culture, a scholar being influenced by Western culture, a scholar being influenced by Japanese culture. It is believed that a good translator should play a positive role rather than a negative one. This may improve the quality of translation.
