Derek Bok is one of the greatest presidents of Harvard University. During his 21-year long governance of Harvard, he gradually formed his unique ideas of the social responsibilities of a uni- versity, which emphasize that a university should shoulder its social responsibilities through high-quali- ty teaching, research and social services; meanwhile, a university should observe such basic academic values as academic freedom, academic autonomy and academic neutrality; a research university like Harvard should also avoid politicization, over-extension, and commercialization.
