In Western Jin, Eastern Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Buddhism was spread to the East via Hexi. As a result, Buddhism was once very popular in Dunhuang and Liangzhou, where some monks from India and the western regions gathered to translate Sutra and preach Buddhism. Gradually, a number of native monks came into being in the Hexi district and played a significant part in the promotion of Buddhism in Central China and Southern Region of the Yangtze River. Dunhuang and Liangzhou became the center of cultural exchanges between the East and the West. Therefore, Hexi played a vital role in the history of Sutra translation. This paper probes into the general situation of the pilgrimage to the West by some monks via Hexi and native monks and Sutra translation in Liangzhou and the important role in promoting Buddhism respectively.
