This paper introduced the main types of alginate wound dressings on the international market, as well as their main properties and applications. Taking into consideration the latest results of clinical researches conducted around the world, the paper described the unique properties of alginate wound dressings including their gel blocking properties and their capacity to promote wound healing, facilitate haemostasis, reduce pain, suppress bacteria growth and lower treatment cost. Our findings showed that because of their high absorbent and gel forming capacity, alginate wound dressings have very high applied value in the treatment of leg ulcers, burn wounds, pressure sores, surgical wounds and many other types of wounds with high level of exudates.
