略论郭秉文“四个平衡”的办学思想

中国近现代著名教育家郭秉文认为 ,要办好一所大学 ,最重要的是要达到“四个平衡”即“通才与专才平衡” ,“人文与科学平衡” ,“师资与设备”平衡 ,“国内与国际平衡” ;认为著名大学不仅要成为国内教学、科研的中心 ,而且要成为国际学术交流的中心 ,只有博取百家之长、广求世界知识 ,才能使学生放宽眼界、开拓心胸。

Guo Bing wen, an educationist in modern China, put forward his idea of four balances' in running a university, i. e., the balance between well rounded education and specialized education, the balance between humanistic education and science education, the balance between the investment in teaching staff and equipment and the balance between inside a country and outside a country. He thought that a renown university should be a center for teaching and research as well as international scholastic exchange. Only by assimilating from different schools of learning and seeking for knowledge from all over the world can the students broaden their horizon of view, open their mind and take in knowledge and wisdom possessed by human being.
