Based on race and religion, Malaysia' s division of its population into different ethnic groups has afflicted Malaysian Indian Muslims with great sufferings as a result of their double identity ever since the colonial era. Indian Muslims are neither accepted by the Malays with the same Islamic belief, nor fully recognized by Indian diaspora among whom Hindus predominate. In order to obtain the political, economic and other social resources, Indian Muslims have to find a sense of belonging in Malaysia, sandwiched between the Malays and the Indian ethnic groups. Although multi-ethnic Malaysia is committed to building a "Malaysian nationality" , the Indian Muslim case shows that the integration of Malay- sian pluralistic society still has a long way to go.
