Despite the fact that that the United States has considered South America to be its home turf, nevertheless Chinese immigrants and products have introduced the Chinese dream as an alternative to Bolivia's 'American Dream'. This dream comes through the movies and televisions, and is permeated by outdated bits of Chinese culture including kung fu, scholarly gardens, and the mystical mists of Avatar. However, when we turn our gaze to how Chinese immigrants actually inhabit Bolivia, we discover a 'Chinese Style Fried Chicken Restaurant', which in no way conforms to the global Chinese imaginary. But in fact, this contradiction may in fact be the special characteristic of contemporary Chineseness. Ordinary Chinese immigrants adapt to the society in which they find themselves, even as at the level of the imaginary, Chinese people still in habit an independent and ancient ethnicity. Shen Shuqin believes that the time has come to face and resolve the paradoxes generated by this surreal and absurd symbolic imaginary.
