: As a genre expressing melancholy or sadness, elegies abound in N- ative American literature ranging from early oral performances to contemporary writings. Rather than highlighting the past and personal loss as mainstream literature does, Native American elegies embody the mourning of collective melancholia, reflecting indigenous people's unique vision of the world and the sufferings they experienced. Another important message these elegies convey is that the people might live on.
