Comments on the event of burning the British Consulate by Zhenjiang people

1889年发生在镇江的火烧英国领事馆事件,是租界巡捕无故殴打摊贩引起的人民反英壮举。事件最终以惩办肇事者、恢复英国领事馆而结案,但表现了镇江人民反抗英国殖民者肆意欺压中国人民的英雄气概,震慑了英国殖民当局,打击了其嚣张气焰,一定程度上维护了民族权益,为最终收回租界创造了条件。

The event of Zhenjiang people＇s burning the British Consulate in 1889 was caused by foreign policemen who drubbed a Chinese peddler.The event ended with the punishment of the peace breakers and the resuming of the British Consulate.However,it was a hero spirit exhibition of Chinese anti-imperialism,gave British governors a heavy shock,stroke their arrogance and vindicated our national rights and interests in some way.At the same time, it created conditions for taking back the Zhenjiang Concession in the end.
