The article explores the relationship of the geometries of modern architecture to the disordered spontaneous vernacular environment of the Chinese countryside through the lens of two small projects. The Hetang Art Gallery, located in Hunan's Zhangjiajie, is a transformation of existing buildings. The Art Gallery is built with the most common brick masonry and retains the original framework of the existing structures unchanged. A small tearoom of only 67 square meters, located in Shanxi's Fuping county, is built from salvaged waste brick. In both projects modern geometries are constructed using the lowest and most commonly available materials. Projects such as these are bringing a new architectural language to local villages.
