They are here — so are yesterday's innovation.For the next technological advancement in shipping, some in the industry are placing their bets on 'Big Data', the moniker for the growing ability to carry out sophisticated computer analysis of massive amounts of real-time operational information.Classif ication societies are already examining Big Data's potential in shipping after its advantages have already been proven in other industries.Data from nanosensors will be transmitted to a global network, adding to a knowledge base that will not only aid in the operation of one vessel but of others with similar characteristics.American Bureau of Shipping(ABS) chief executive Christopher Wiernicki, who recently used a Connecticut Maritime Association conference to urge the industry to embrace Big Data, says it will allow class surveys to be more focused and efficient, and less intrusive for the shipowner, with the wealth of information available at the click of a mouse.
