On Rationality and Limitations of Workshop and Store System in Tang Dynasty

唐代坊市制度是中国历代坊市制度发展的顶峰。坊市制度是一种人为的格局,而不是城市自然发展的产物,有很大的局限性。不可否认的是,唐代坊市制度的某些规定虽然不如后代"自由",但不论是从它的历史继承与发展,还是从城市的防御、管理、服务功能,以及从维护治安和市场秩序的稳定上看,都有其存在的合理性。

The workshop and store system in Tang Dynasty is the peak in the development of such systems in China＇s dynasties. The system is an artificial pattern, instead of the result of natural development of the cities, which had considerable limitations. It cannot be denied that although the system in Tang Dynasty was not as ＂free＂ as the later systems, it had rationality in its historical inheritance and development, in the functions of city defense, management, and service, and in the maintenance of security and market stability.
