Calling in the Soul: Gender and the Cycle of Live in a Hmong Village by Patricia V. Symonds, an American professor of anthropology at Brown University, is an outstanding ethnography on Hmong religious culture. As a great ethnographic work about Hmong religions, it focuses in detail on Hmong value, women's status, and conceptions of birth, death and reincarnation from a female' s perspective. It provides a very detailed record and analysis of the Hmong religious ritual of soul - calling. The book is thus a great reference for the study of Hmong religions in and out of China.
