On the Genesis of Modern Rural Novels of the May 4^(th) Movement

"五四"乡土小说的出现和兴盛不是偶然的,是时代和文学自身发展的结果。究其原因,一方面是作家对当时"五四"文坛弊端的反思,是作家的自觉和读者的期待视野相互融合的结果;另一方面,乡土小说作为世界性的文学现象,它是在人类社会进入工业社会后,随着资本主义的全球扩张,在两种文明的现代性冲突中逐渐形成的一种世界性的文学现象。

The rise of rural novels of the May 4th Movement is not accidental but a result of times and the self development of literature. To trace its origin, the writers made reflections on the shortcomings of the May 4th Movement literary circles and the convergence of their own and readers＂ anticipations, and rural novels, as a world -wide literary phenomenon, emerged as a result of global capitalism expansion and the conflicts between capitalist and rural civilizations.
