Based on a literature review, the author of this paper attempts to conceptualize identity prototypes regarding L2learner/user of English over the past 50years as embedded in academic discourses. Typically in the 1970s,the ideal learner was a faithful imitator whose L2use and cultural conduct were strictly modeled on native speakers. From the 1980sonwards,this was gradually replaced by alegitimate speaker, claiming equal language standards and rights with native speakers.Emerging under the increased influence of globalization and postmodernism in the new millennium is a playful creator, who constructs unconventional hybrid language use for distinct self-expression.These prototypes have their respective characteristics, contexts, and important limitations and constraints.English education in local contexts against the background of globalization calls for new identity prototypes of English learners.
