As a "follower- eentric" leadership theory, the Social Identity Theory of Leadership has reinvigorated social psychological re- search on leadership by employing social identity to explain the generation and development of leadership in a group. The main tenets of this theory are that ( 1 ) followers choose effective leaders by the function of social identity, specifically, group prototypical leaders are more supported and trusted by the followers, and (2) leaders can implement the leadership by reshaping the social identity of the follow- ers. Empirical evidences, merits and demerits of this theory are discussed subsequently. Then, this theory is contrasted and integrated with other related leadership theories. Finally, directions for future advances are put forward.
