Objective To observe the effect of scalp acupuncture in waking long-term comatose patients due to severe traumatic brain injury. Method Patients in comatose state over 3 weeks or with Glasgow Coma Scale(GCS) 8 score were divided into an observation group(n=20) and a control group(n=20). The two groups were given same Western medicine treatment. In addition, the observation group was given scalp acupuncture at Baihui(GV20), Sishencong(EX-HN1), Shenting(GV24), the Anterior Oblique Line of Vertex-temporal(MS6), and Shuigou(GV26), with 30-minute electrical stimulation each time followed by 6-hour retaining of the needles, once per day. Result The mean waking time and rate were 42.2 d and 75.0%(15/20) in the observation group versus 61.1 d and 20.0%(4/20), indicating that the waking time and rate of the observation group were better than those of the control group. Conclusion Scalp acupuncture plus Western medication can produce significant therapeutic efficacy in recovering the consciousness of the comatose patients due to severe traumatic brain injury.
