Liang Qichao's writings on the history of Buddhist scripture translation in ancient China have remained largely unnoticed since their publication in the 1920 s.Taking a close look at this neglected body of writings,the article inquires into Liang's motives for undertaking the research and the way he conducted the study.As one of the first efforts to chronicle a highly significant period in China's history of cultural exchanges and translation,these writings feature profound discussions on translation per se and on the impact of Buddhist scripture translation on Chinese language and literature.In addition to their great historiographical values,these writings bear significantly also on Translation Studies,especially at its current moment of 'historiographical contemplation.'
