The precedent phenomenon is a theory proposed in the study of linguistic culturology .Precedent names ,which appear frequently and repeatedly in mass media and verbal communications ,carry a large amount of cultural information of a given nation or country .Undoubtedly ,precedent phenomenon is a major factor lead-ing to failure in cross-cultural communication for a foreign language learner .From a perspective of verbal com-munication,this paper analyses first the use of precedent names ,and then explores the cultural connotations conveyed by the precedent phenomenon and the reasons behind the wide circulation of precedent names .
