As a composer of unique style since the late 19th century, Claude Debussy （1862 -1918）, creator of the impressionist music, played an important part in modern music, shedding great influence on the direction of music styles of the 19th and even the 20th centuries. He abandoned the traditional western European style and began his own school characterized by ambiguous softness and dreamy elegance. His composing practice opened up a new road for music of the 20th century
