Mary, in the gospels in the New Testament is a young virgin of innocence and kind-heartedness and a saintly mother, both loving and patient, not gifted with a holy nature. On the basis of relevant textual narrations, fine art works since the growth of Christianity in the West have created a series of saintly mother and son images, and Mary has been depicted in different images spanning godliness, humanity, worldliness and localization. The evolution of Mary in the arts sheds lights on the development of Western social-political thoughts since the founding of Christianity and reveals traces of the changes in the relationships between religion and arts.
