Study on Feng Menglong's Novel Notion

冯梦龙是中国古代第一位较为全面地提出小说理论的小说理论家。在其"三言"的三篇序言里,分别提出了小说功用观:重视小说的社会教化作用;小说发展观:总结了古代小说的发生发展历程,并指出了通俗小说起源于话本艺术;小说创作观:小说创作要处理好真实与虚构的关系,并提到了小说创作题材的来源问题,指出小说创作要遵循通俗的原则;小说批评观:评价小说创作要将作品放到具体的历史时代中去评价,不能以今律古。

Feng Menglong was the first novel theorist who has claimed novel theory in ancient China. In his three prefac-es of famous“SanYan”, he pointed out four theories of novels. Firstly, the function of novels was presented that novel should focus on the function of educating the society. Secondly, the development of novel summarized the development of Chinese ancient novels and pointed out that the script of story telling was the origin of popular novels. Thirdly, the cre-ation of novels mentioned that creating novels should deal with the relationship between truth and fiction and it also mentioned the origin of the creative themes and the rules of popularity creation obeyed by novelists. Lastly, criticism of novels should be based on the specific history instead of the current standards.
