This essay introduces briefly the main viewpoints of semiotic perspective in translation and its important notion of the Other that refers not only to the other of self, but also all other living beings over the entire planet. With detailed analyses of how Lin Yutang showed responsibilities for the three types of the Other -- the publisher, the representamen (the source text) and the author, the interpretant (the target text) and its readers -- in the semiosis of his edition-translation work The Wolf of Chungshan, the author points out that Lin' s strong sense of re- sponsibility reflects his full awareness of the Other and is an important factor for the success of his English transla- tion of classic Chinese stories. It is expected that his semiosis will be of some reference to the English translatiort of Chinese literature, classic or modern.
