The 90s saw many fundamental transformations taking place in world politics, economy and technology. These trends, interacting among themselves, have greatly promoted the globalization of world economy, which has become more than ever a information economy. The 21 st century will finally realize the full potential of the integrated global information economy. Facing the challenging 21st century, many well-known multinationals have been adjusting their strategies and reforming their management, the basic principle and goal of which is to make themselves adapt to the world trends and improve their competitiveness.The transformation from largely isolated economies into a integrated global economy, form a industrial society into a information society, has fundamentally changed the environments, conditions and rules ofcompetition. Business entities that do not follow these trends and adapt themselves by reforms and adjustments are destined to fail.Sadly, while multinationals from North America, West Europe and East Asia are speeding up their strategy adjustment and management reform; Chinese companies seem to be less aware to world trends since the 90s. Some of our companies have undergone reforms. However, because their leadership did not study the major trends closely, many of their reforms deviated from the main stream of business development.With the successful conclusion of the Sino-American trade talks, the thorniest obstacle to China's full membership at the WTO has been removed. From all indications, China should join WTO in year 2000, which will make Chinese companies face direct foreign competition on a broader range of industry sectors. These foreign companies have improved their competitiveness through reforms and reorganizations. Chinese companies will face even more pressure from these competitors.In light of this situation, we must first understand the major trends of the world economy and what these trends entail for a specific business entity; study how multinationals from the US, Japan and Europe have reformed to adapt to the new trends and learn from their successes and blunders; and study the impact of these world economic tides on us.Secondly, passive defense must be turned into active rise-to-the-challenge. 1. A sense of crisis should be present when the issue of business reform is brought up. 2. Turn the competition pressure of WTO into a motivation, which will propel our economic reforms and business reforms. Turn nationalistic sentiments into a ethos of hard working and a will to make our country strong.Thirdly, we must be practical and realistic, learn from multinationals, cooperate with them, but compete with them for every inch of the market.
