The antinomy of the Japanese can be reflected in their self-abasement and self- esteem when they are faced with other nations and cultures, thus forming a contradiction of both "worship" and "contempt" foreign things, and the capricious attitude of absorpting and excluding the policy-making foreign languages. The anxiety of these two national sentiments and the puzzles of are closely linked to the crisis and frustration as well as the military success and failure they experienced in the history. Since Japan's Founding and Meiji Restoration, this contradiction has been reflected especially in their changing attitude and policies to the languages of Chinese and English. When their national consciousness became more and more intense, they opposed Chinese language and character at first, and then they rejected Western languages and culture after the Pacific War because of their own imperialist hegemony, all of which resulted in the capricious attitudes in promoting or forbidding English-learning.
