In general, ZHANG＇s studies highlight meta - functions and contextual theory, two constructs of systemic functional linguistics. Specifically, his studies of cohesion underline the textual function, the interpersonal function, the ideational function of cohesive devices, and also the constraint of situational context on cohesion. Halliday＇s academic efforts on coherence enrich Halliday＇s his theoretical proposal, with emphasis on the decisive roles of situational context and cultural context. Situational context serves as the prerequisite of text coherence and cultural context as the external condition.
