The Struggle and Surrender of Power: a Case Study on the Commercial Treaties(1902-1907) in the Late Qing Dynasty

依照《辛丑条约》约定,清政府于1902-1907年与6个国家进行了谈判,并与英、美、日、葡四国签署了《续议通商行船条约》,包括《中英商约》、《中美商约》、《中日商约》等。以各商约的中英对照文本为研究对象,结合谈判期间的外交函电及会议记录等历史档案,再现了缔约过程中双方在语言文字上的较量,通过分析影响翻译策略的因素,揭示出文字背后权力的争夺与妥协。

Current studies understood well enough the infringement of the Commercial Treaty(1902-1907) on Chinese autonomy and stressed the beneficial side of its economic rules. However, in terms of translational process and product, analysis based on historical data and texts themselves is still lacking. The paper thus probes into the bilingual treaties and summarizes the translation strategies by reconstructing negotiation process with a quantitative study of historical documents, revealing the manipulation of words under the struggle and surrender of powers.
