Experiencing All kinds of Hardships, Cut Out a Path for the Followers: Fang Guoyu and His Study in History and Culture of Naxi People

方国瑜先生是纳西历史文化研究的开拓者和奠基人。自1933年冬开始实地调查,到1979年《纳西族的渊源、迁徙与分布》的发表,在长达半个世纪的时间里,方先生在资料的搜集和整理、历史地理问题、纳西历史文化框架体系、民族史研究的理论、民族文献的运用、民族与文化之间的关系等方面都作出开创性贡献,为纳西历史文化的研究奠定基础。同时,方先生的上述贡献对研究中国民族史具有普遍指导意义。

Professor Fang Guoyu is the pioneer and founder of Study in history and culture of the Naxi People. In half a century, from starting a field survey in the winter of 1934 to the publishing of The Origin, Migration and Distribution of Naxi people, professor Fang makes great initiative contributions in material collecting and sorting, the issue of history and geography, culture system of Naxi people, study theory of national history, application of national literature and the relationship between nationality and culture, which lays the foundation for the research of Naxi history and culture. His contributions have general guiding significance to the study of Chinese ethnic history.
