Aseki, a girl from a civilian family, and Rokunosuke Takasaka, a boy from a tobacco shop, were childhood sweetheart, and they loved each other. When Aseki had to follow her parents＇ order to marry Yū Harada, who was a senior government official from a wealthy family, Rokunosuke felt heartbreak, and his life turned down suddenly. Rokunosuke＇marriage with Sugida, which was arranged by his parents, made him escalate his indulgence. Finally, he lost his family and assets, became a rickshaw driver. Rokunosuke used an unusual method, his degeneration, to resist the feudal custom, to accuse the inequality of the secular society, and it also leaded to his destruction at the end.
