莫言是新时期以来最具创新意识的作家之一。自20世纪80年代中期发表成名作《红高粱》以来,就吸引了很多人的关注。他的小说之所以具有独特的魅力和永久的生命力,在于小说的内容上他关注的是民族的豪气和正气,由此确定小说历史和现实双重寻找的主题。形式上他采取西方现代派手法与华夏民族性相结合的表现方式。莫言认为创作方法不会永远一成不变,这种文学创作理论是他小说写作实践的经验总结与升华。

Mo Yan is one of the most creative writers in the new period. He has attracted attention since the publication of his masterpiece Red Sorghum in the middle 1980s. The great concern over national heroic spirit and rectitude endows his novels with unique charm as well as lasting vitality, helping to determine the dual themes of his novels, in historical and realistic aspect. He combines national character with western modernist techniques in his novels and thereby forms a particular form of expression. Mo Yan considered that the novel technique should be diversified, and this literary theory is gradually formed in his writing practice.
